Dear Family & Friends, Colleagues & Clients,

Another year traverses to an end. Another holiday season invigorates us to spend time with loved ones and partake in traditions founded in our familial histories. But there is a different electricity that hums in the air this time around.

Its charge has notes of newness and nostalgia, the fresh and the familiar. Last holiday season, we had to replace party favors for PCR tests, and sugar cookies did not have the same aromatic effect nor melt-in-your-mouth sensation due to our senses being sabotaged by varying illnesses. Even if you and yours were relatively healthy last December before vaccines and boosters were available, the responsibility of social distancing and the inevitability of smaller-than-normal holiday gatherings most often left the holiday spirit feeling unfulfilled.

This year, we make up for lost memories and traditions that were out-of-reach due to prior circumstances. While this may be a monthly newsletter, the Young Huh team is more-so using it as an excuse to send hopeful thoughts to our design community and to wish everyone a happy and healthy end of 2021. Celebrate fiercely. Eat something sweet, drink something warm, and cherish the time spent with those that you love.

As we entertain the conversation of balancing the traditional with the experimental in terms of this holiday season, the same conversation can often be heard within the YHID offices as this mentality is a cornerstone of Young’s design philosophy.

Furthering this discussion with some primo evidence of blending the new with the old, Veranda published a Philadelphia double-apartment that Young designed for a client couple who recently moved to the City of Brotherly Love. Combining two apartments into one provided some challenge when creating a cohesive, personable living space, but Young’s blend of modern, traditional, and bold design culminated in a home that is both welcoming and exciting.
